TEST DRIVE: July
Welcome to
empatheias' test drive meme. This test drive is to help interested players test their characters in the game's environment. We've included a few prompts that incorporate specific elements of the game, though you'll find all of them have a lot of leeway for players to get as creative as necessary. Before diving in, here are a few things we'd like to remind everyone about the game in general:- Date reminders. Reserves open 24th of June and Applications (Canon | OC) open a week later on July 1st. Apps will only be open for four days!
- OC Reminder! Just a quick reminder that original characters are allowed. Those interested can also use the test drive. OCs do not need to be reserved.
- Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.
- Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.
- Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus, those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.
- First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!
- Transfer to in-game. If accepted, you can assume threads made on the Test Drive happen in-game if the scenario can reasonably fit. For new characters, these threads do not count for activity check. However, these can be supplementary threads for players already in-game.
- For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!
Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!
• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try?
• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request. Creating jobs for the purpose of the test drive is absolutely doable.
• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...
• Prompt D: It's been a few weeks since the city of Verens has been covered in steam. It's not so bad for some people! In fact, most establishments are saving so much money because the steam helps power their appliances and the like without the need for elemental cores. It does, however, also mean that people aren't acting the way they should. You might be one such person, or you could be trying to face your inner demons - the part of you you've always been resisting, but it's there, ever present… it's time to reach out to the truth and face yourself head on.
• Prompt E: The steam has caused a good number of people to flee from Verens to Theasthai. Here, the well-known playwright Matthew Floyd Ebber has seized this opportunity to recruit both locals and Otherworlders for the production performance of his new play entitled Hats, which he hopes would be a much bigger hit than Doves Never Lie. For a small fee (or free tickets, or maybe you just wanted to help), you have been persuaded to join in as his staff to make props, set up the backdrops and stage, experiment with emotion magic to produce various special effects, or even be extras in a huge crowd scene where everyone wears different hats with varying emotional effects ranging from calming the wearer to causing the wearer to pick a fight with the nearest person. Be warned that Mr. Ebber can be a little… overexcited and overbearing with his new masterpiece, and he will constantly redo the crowd scene until he is satisfied.
• Prompt F: If the artistic flair of Theasthai doesn’t suit you, then perhaps the more rugged Shaarnath will offer enough to occupy your time while you avoid the steam. The citizens of this desert city are readying their defenses in the event that a being such as GEM makes its way to their walls. A key component of this is, of course, the training of wyverns, and all hands are on deck to see to it that these creatures are fit for battle. Tasks to achieve this include not only feeding them (watch your fingers!) and cleaning their scales (it does get awfully gritty with all that sand around), but also sparring with the wyverns. How are you with a spear? Hopefully decent, because you just might be asked to hold your own against these creatures to test their skills!
• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include apples and/or butterflies.
Velvet Crowe | Tales of Berseria
[ There's a huge sigh and an individual who sounds slightly put-out and annoyed by the whole situation. However, no image of the woman to go along with it. ]
Alright, who wants to fill me in on what's happened in the last six or seven months around this place? A girl goes home to take care of some unfinished business and then gets dragged back here to find she missed some of the fun. I'm not talking about the damn Flower Festival either. What I want to know are the important facts.
World-changing events. [ Maybe there are some here who will still remember Velvet's voice after several months, that they'll be identify her as one of the people who tried to attack Sosyne last time she was in Verens. ]
D - Already a daemon
[ Ever since that Scarlet Night, Velvet has been dealing with her inner daemon - mostly unleashing it whenever she felt like it. Which means that the steam doesn't change her personality all that much from what she's usually like. People should be glad that Velvet has a relative handle on her caged self.
However, it does make for an interesting stroll through Verens. She may be affected but there are others all around her. Velvet makes no move to help some random native who's clearly having trouble keeping their dark side in check. Arms are crossed over her chest as she watches from a safe distance. ]
This is almost like watching a whole town turn into daemons. Except they likely won't transform into actual monsters.
[ And if they do, w e l p. Velvet could possibly help with all of those negative emotions but chances are good that people will end up dead. ]
F - Wyvern care
[ Dragons of any kind are usually a bad sign in her world. They are malakhim who have been so tainted by malevolence that they become horrible and power monsters. Unlike humans they can't be saved or purified once they reach this state. However in Empatheias they're just regular creatures. Some are kept as pets and Velvet has fond memories of one wyvern in particular. She imagines that someone else is caring for the creature these days but needs something to do with her time.
This is how she finds herself down in Shaarnath tending to their creatures. It helps that she may be able to learn more about GEM by hanging around the people preparing for an attack.
Velvet has subdued her wyvern enough to be able to get close enough to clean their scales. As she scrubbing it with a brush, the creature growls tempermentally at her. ]
Keep that up and you won't get any treats. [ Her tone is stern but not angry, like a big sister scolding their sibling. ]
G - Appleboo
[ It may have been just a few months since Velvet was last in Verens and maybe it was only a few months at home too but to her it feels like so much longer. She's in the market when a bunch of bright red shiny apples catches her attention, drawing her closer. After taking one in hand, it may appear to anyone else that she's just staring at the fruit.
Yet there's a cool breeze sweeping in through the summer heat and it smells like the ocean. Just the other day Velvet was home, with Laphicet trapped in the perfect dream world. She was (always) human, her family alive and healthy, exploring new lands with her little brother. The breeze shifts and takes on the scent of fresh cut apples. ]

[It reminds him so much of home. Of watching people be consumed by Malevolence. Laphicet can't help but to feel uneasy about this. Let alone part of him obviously worrying about his own situation in this, as a malak and all. Particularly without Eleanor around this time with him having made his pact with her, before.]

I'm sure they won't become daemons. That seems reserved for our world despite some of similarities this one shares with it.
[ Velvet lingers for a minute longer before looking down at Phi and giving him a smile. ]
Shall we go break it up?

[Wondering if it might happen to him. Still, it is Velvet and for all that she has her moments, her determination and stubbornness to do what she wants, she does offer to help. Laphicet isn't sure if it might work, but....well, they could at least try talk to them? That much couldn't hurt, right? So he gives a nod, his ahoge shifting with the movement of his head.]

[ Not having Eleanor here to act as a tether for Phi is a concern because no one wants to see him become a dragon. Perhaps he'll have to find a different vessel. For now, they have a fight to break up. Velvet isn't doing this for the boy at her side. She is still a daemon and filled with malevolence but this is where she lives now.
Artorius is dead, Innominat sealed away, the world keeps turning and Velvet's role there is done for the most part. She has nothing all that pressing to get back to anymore. Even if she has the "dream life" this is also a place where she lives now. Not for Laphi, not for Phi - but for herself. And while Velvet can't go back to being that simple village girl, she can still make this city a place where she wants to live.
So Velvet strolls over with a purpose, stops near the people bickering and places a hand on her hip. Gold eyes narrow at both of them. ]
That's enough. Break it up now. You should both turn around and go home.
[ Threatening violence usually works but in this situation it might only escalate the fight. ]

[Then he wants to. Wants to at least try. Which is why, in spite of it probably being better for him to flee from the fog and effects of it, he stays by her side. As he always has and always would. Or, always wants to do so at least.
Not that he likely seems intimidating in any way to anyone that doesn't know his real potential power. But he would always have her back.]

[ And Eleanor but they're missing their exorcist now. Even as they head into the steam to confront the two natives, Velvet keeps an eye on Phi. If it looks as if he's being affected then she has no problem dragging him out of here.
They must look an odd pair, a woman and a kid trying to put a stop to two burly men squabbling in the streets but they've faced down tougher individuals. The natives look them over and don't appear to be that chided. ]
This is your only warning. Return to your homes before I'm forced to get rough. My friend here may look small but he packs one hell of a punch, isn't that right Phi?

And, well. He blinks, glancing up to Velvet briefly before giving a nod and raising a hand in a fist.]

She offers him a small smile before turning her glare on the men again. ]
This kid has fought monsters, dragons and gods alike so you should be wary of getting on his bad side.
[ The men look between Velvet and Phi as if debating their next move. In the end it appears as if neither of them are willing to fight them and turn away with some grumbling. Velvet keeps watch to make sure both are a good distance apart before relaxing a bit. ]
Looks like they didn't want to make you angry, Phi.

[And it hadn't escalated into getting anyone hurt or killed. That was good. Laphicet is at least glad of that much. Even if he might be unsure how to feel about inspiring such fear or nervousness in those guys. Sure, he had wanted a Wanted poster and all, but. Well. He knows this appearance isn't all that intimidating.]

[ She may not have been looking for a fight with the natives but there was no way in hell that Velvet would have let those guys get the better of them. They've survived way to much to get beaten by a couple of weak commoners. ]
So how are you feeling with all of this emotional charge in the air, Phi?

[That much he was glad for at least. Given he knows how Velvet could get in a fight. Not to mention Laphicet's abilities as well. It probably wouldn't have gone well for the others.]
That...I'm not sure it is affecting me too much yet. But we should probably be careful? I wouldn't want to hurt you or anyone else.

[ Even if she has more control over her darker impulses, it doesn't mean she would have gone too easy on the men. They might have walked away with more than a couple of bruises. ]

[That nobody gets hurt in the first place to need his healing artes. Laphicet all but lights up as usual with Velvet mentioning curry though. Of course, as if she has to ask if he wants to taste test curry.
Which is to say he does literally light up, making the air around him brighten and all but sparkle with his excitement and enthusiasm for his favourite meal. Boys and their stomachs.]
