TEST DRIVE: March
Welcome to
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)
- Date reminders. Reserves open 22 February and Applications (Canon | OC) open a week later on March 1st. Apps will only be open for four days!
- OC Reminder! Just a quick reminder that original characters are allowed. Those interested can also use the test drive. OCs do not need to be reserved.
- Emotions are key! Empatheias' premise focuses on how anyone's emotions can affect their environment, be it big or small. While not every emotion will cause a reaction, significant ones definitely will. How much effect a character will have will ultimately be up to you, the player. Also, while we're giving a lot of leeway for the test drive, keep in mind that there will be some limits in the actual game.
- Everyone has an amulet. All characters have a unique amulet that is specialized for them. It will contain all of their emotion drops and it serves as the network device. Remember, communication is telepathic. Otherwise, it works basically the same.
- Assume the character is already in the game. Because "OMG WHERE AM I IS THIS REAL LIFE" threads aren't going to be very helpful in this test drive! Plus, those are going to happen in-game, anyway. So to make things easier, just assume that they've been around at least a week or so. Still learning the ropes, but not a complete "first day" experience.
- First or third person allowed. Your threads can be in either first or third, but we'd advise being flexible about it. Remember, these threads can also be used in your application for samples! Reminder: We only require one sample and it can be done in either format. We have also made a change to our sample requirements, so look over the Applications page!
- Transfer to in-game. If accepted, you can assume threads made on the Test Drive happen in-game if the scenario can reasonably fit. For new characters, these threads do not count for activity check. However, these can be supplementary threads for players already in-game.
- For your threads, put the Character Name and the Canon in the subject line to help readily identify them. You're also welcome to use more than one prompt for respondents to choose from. If you have any questions or want to brush up on the game information, refer to the Game Information entry. Otherwise, tag around and have fun!
Now with that out of the way, here are some prompts you guys can work from!
• Prompt A: How about giving the emotions a try?
• Prompt B: Refer to the Task Board and choose a task your character may be interested in taking up. For this prompt, you could have your character ask for help, already be in the middle of the job, or react to it in some way. Perhaps they were an unfortunate victim or want to create a job countering an existing one. You could even have a prompt making a job request. Creating jobs for the purpose of the test drive is absolutely doable.
• Prompt C: How about giving the amulets a go? Start a telepathic conversation and see how it works. Remember, the amulets are sending out the owner's thoughts so might want to be careful about how the stream of consciousness goes...
• Prompt D: Self-proclaimed knight (and actual millionaire) Vermouth Pennybags has heard a local legend about a the infamous Chalice of Wisdom, an ancient relic said to be hidden somewhere within the city and only attainable by the most valiant and quick-witted in all the land. Of course, Vermouth Pennybags is not valiant or quick-witted, but he is very rich, and so he has enlisted the help of the Otherworlders in following the clues to find the Chalice. If you are successful, you will be rewarded handsomely...but only if you find the Chalice.
- The Knights Who Say...: The first task that Mr. Pennybags sets forth is for you to find a...shrubbery. Yes, a shrubbery, that supposedly, when its leaves are used to make tea, will leave behind dregs with another clue once the tea is drunk. As such, not just any shrubbery will do. You will need to fetch a shrubbery from a certain glade in the Ferril Mountains, where you will find a number of nice-looking and not-too-expensive shrubberies. The question is, which is the one the legend speaks of? One has golden leaves near the base, and that’s the one you’re looking for. However, it may take some time to find it! Did you bring your garden shears?
- A Vicious Streak A Mile Wide: Once the shrubbery is obtained and Mr. Pennybags drinks the magic tea, his next clue will lead him to conclude that you need to capture a...deadly bunny rabbit. What exactly makes a bunny deadly remains to be seen, but fortunately for you, there are plenty of farms nearby that keep bunnies around. There is indeed one very violent one among the bunch, but it won’t be so easy to find it. You will have to focus your own feelings of anger and hate to find the bunny in question, and even then, you will need to be careful. Once it’s been found out, the bunny will attack! Defend yourself against nibbles and wrestle the unruly beast into submission. The Chalice is on the line.
- What is Your Quest: Mr. Pennybags decides that what he must do with the rabbit to determine his next steps are to...set it free, because it keeps biting him, the little bugger. Instead, he conveniently finds a map at the local library that purportedly leads to the Chalice’s location! Following the map will take you deep into the woods on the far side of Lake Niras, where you will find a bridge across a ravine. The bridge is rickety and old, and a fall from this height will surely kill you. If you dare to cross, only bolstering feelings of confidence and courage will see you safely across. And should you make it to the other side...you will find Vermouth Pennybags himself there, snapping a picture of you and informing you that this was all just an elaborate set-up for a story in tomorrow’s newspaper. What a con. Well, enjoy those fifteen minutes of fame!
• Prompt E: An engineering society in Briarlan named The Beta Alpha Engineering Society or B.A.E.S. recently developed a new entertainment system called Crystal Simulation. The Crystal Simulation is a means to create a four-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with on a seemingly real or physical way by a person using a specific equipment: a pair of bulky transparent rimmed eyeglasses made from the same crystals that can be found in the mines. This is a huge step in forwarding technology in all of Empatheias, and Verens is more than lucky for the B.A.E.S. to have decided to use the city as their testing grounds. Put a pair on and let the B.A.E.S. teleport you into an alternate reality through telepathy.
- Tutorial: The moment you open your eyes after putting the Simulation Glasses on, you find yourself in a desert. There's sand everywhere, even in your shoes. At least, it definitely feels real. Even the heat of the sun is scorching hot despite it being winter in Empatheias right now. You find that your clothes have changed, and you feel like such a beginner with your light clothes and small dagger. A long rectangular white box floats in front of you, and above it reads: ENTER YOUR NAME. The first word or name that you think of ends up being your name in this reality. You think of your actual skills from your home world, and these thoughts are transmitted to the B.A.E. in charge of your simulation. They sent you a mental image of a row of empty boxes in front of you, and on top of it reads: LVL 1, AMATEUR. At the very least, there seem to be other amateurs around you - in fact, all their names are floating above their heads!
- Level Up!: After finding out that this 4D reality is something similar to a "game", you find that in this reality, there are missions to accomplish. Unfortunately, you cannot accomplish anything while you're still an Amateur. Thanks to your trusty dagger (which needs to be re-sharpened every time you kill a monster), you can chop up the many cacti all around, kill Fluffy Bunnies, or head to the nearby oasis and make a fishing rod and catch fish. Doing these tasks add to your EXP, and once you reach level 5, you'll be prompted to change your class. You've been promoted, and it comes with new skills and a neat costume change! Although… if your B.A.E. thinks you're amusing in a bunny costume, then they won't hesitate to put you in one, instead. Nobody said this simulation was perfect!
- The Desert Dragon: Once enough players have reached level 5 and have changed classes, the desert will suddenly get dark. Winds will blow and howl until the sandstorm blinds everyone temporarily. Then, a roar. Once everyone's regained their sight, they'll find a white dragon with eyes glowing. It reeks of hatred and anger, and each claw is gripping a large gold ball with a giant star emblem on it. The dragon flies around the desert wreaking havoc and destroying the settlements in the oasis. Your job is to defeat this creature. Use your skills, your emotions (perhaps love and happiness will counter the dragon?), and try to pop those balls. They seem to be giving him power! Once the dragon has been defeated, the simulation is over and everyone who participated will be given 100 sylvs for their trouble. Thank you!
• Prompt F: Every year at Lake Niras, a group of fishing enthusiasts host the annual Iron Fish Tournament, in which everyone can compete as individuals or as a team in order to catch the rarest fish. A winner is determined by the size and rarity of the fish, but most of the veterans are here for only one prize: to catch the legendary Demon of the Lake. What is the Demon of the Lake? Well, nobody has really seen it with their own eyes, but there is definitely something in the water, but those who managed to get it to nibble have never been able to reel it out. Maybe this is the year that the demon is conquered?
- Fishing 101: The nice thing about this competition is that everyone can borrow their own gear and boats, which is welcoming even for those who just want to have a relaxing day fishing. There is an instructor teaching a class the basics of fishing just near the water, but if someone already knows their way with a fishing pole is encouraged to take a novice on board and teach them the ways. Who knows, whether you're both beginners or one teaching the other, you might just make a great team!
- The Game is On: Once people are out on their boats, they'll quickly learn that Empatheias isn't your typical world and conventional fishing wisdom may not apply here. For example, aside from using the correct lure and bait, one must be in a right emotional state in order to attract the fish they want. This is all explained to any of the newcomers, of course. Talking about happy things will attract small exotic flying fish, while experiencing negative emotions will attract the heavier fish, although they're not as rare as the former. Remember, winning results are based on both size and rarity! There is also a third type of fish, although they're not attracted to any strong emotions nor are they part of the competition. Why is that? Well... that's because these ones explode if they're not thrown back into the lake quick enough. They can be identified by a small unicorn-like horn on their foreheads, so watch out!
- Catch Me If You Can: Those who are persistent enough will eventually feel a strong bite, although most attempts at trying to reel their prize will end in their rods being yanked out of their hand. Those who are less fortunate will probably fall into the water, too! Perhaps this is a two-person job. Those who are strong enough to actually hold on to their rod will only have it be broken, too. Surely this is the legendary Demon of the Lake! Unfortunately, there is no way to catch it... but hey, the fish is the friends we made along the way, right? As for those who are frustrated enough to dive into the water, it'll be too hard to see the figure of the demon, but a giant tentacle will catch them and their partner and throw them out of the lake!
• Prompt G: Make your own! It could include goldfish and/or carrots.
Momo Yaoyorozu | My Hero Academia
A contemplative Momo can be found at the port, her legs dangling and slightly kicking as she’s seated by the docks. Her eyes are transfixed at the horizon, though occasionally following the ships passing by. The water beneath her gently sways; her bare feet feeling sprays of cold water from it. It’s almost nice...
...if only she wasn’t leagues—scratch that, worlds—away from home, that is.
"It's been a week, huh..."
With that, she lets out a sigh. She's been trying to not delve into it too much, distracting herself with the task of getting to know this place more and its inhabitants, but she lets herself indulge in her thoughts now. The truth is, she’s feeling quite anxious about all... well, this. The unfamiliar always had that effect on her, but it’s only multiplied tenfold here. She’s never been this far away from home; never had to truly fend off by herself. What if her parents are going out of their minds with worry right now? What if their other classmates and teachers are too? The last thing she needs is for UA's reputation to take another hit, what with her disappearance and all. Her studies will surely be lagging behind, too. She’s supposed to be contacting agencies for her work studies now, not learning the ropes at some foreign land.
As her mind fills up with more and more anxious thoughts about home, the water below her seemingly mimics her spiraling thoughts. To and fro, the water starts swaying with much more force than it initially had. It builds up enough momentum until, finally, she’s jolted out of her thoughts with a splash of water to her face.
She gasps, immediately standing up and wiping her face. When she looks back at the water though, it’s reverted to its earlier calm waves. She remembers then how reactive this place is with emotions and sighs at herself for letting her thoughts get the best of her. Maybe it’s time to head back. Wringing out a part of her now-drenched shirt, she lightly chides herself.
“One thing at a time, Momo. One thing at a time.”
→PROMPT D-1
[Momo’s quite eager to accept the task, of course. Being a hero means helping out others in their times of need. And while "finding shrubbery for tea” isn’t the most heroic of tasks, she’s more than eager to prove her worth here. Making her way to the Ferril Mountains was quite exciting—she’s never experienced exploring mountains by herself before, and she does feel like every bit of an adventurer in search of an ancient relic trekking like this. Upon reaching the glade though, her giddy smile effectively wanes. The clearing stretches far, far beyond what she’s expecting. She’s supposed to find some teeny leaves amid all this, huh.]
...w-was this search really meant for one person to undertake?
→PROMPT D-2
[Have a very frazzled Momo in the midst of defending herself from the deadly bunny’s insistent attacks with a shield. She has a plan in mind, however. A tranquilizer gun would be ideal to put the bunny in a more subdued state enough to commence capture. With her ability, she can easily create one too... except she can hardly focus when she’s fending off attacks like this.
She needs someone to distract the bunny for a little while and buy her time. Maybe you can offer her a little help?]
→WILDCARD
[Feel free to throw other scenarios at me too and I'd be glad to play that with you! o/]
D-2
[HE IS GETTING TOO OLD FOR THIS SHIT!!]
[So here he is, facing off with a rabid rabbit alongside one of his students, his coat off, trying to use it like a matador's cape whilst freezing his ass off.]
HERE, HERE, THIS WAY you little psychotic shit--
[He swings in close to Yaoyorozu, trying to get the coat between the shield and the rabbit long enough to get it to switch targets--and switch it does! Somehow managing to climb it's way up the coat to his arm, screaming the entire time]
GAAAAAAAAAAAH--holyshitholyshitholyshit--!!!
[He flips his coat at the last second right before the little bastard latches onto his FACE, trying to catch it up in the fabric like a sac--only for the little shit to almost instantly find the armhole of his coat, escaping back to the ground.]
Oh my god, are you kidding me!?
[This, ladies and gentleman, is your former number one hero. Bested by a rabbit.]
no subject
Which is why when the rabbit finally shifts its target and she's treated to a sight of the formidable All Might screaming as he wrestles with a bunny and losing, she's just...
Well, speechless may be an understatement.
She doesn't completely snap out of until the bunny hops off of her teacher and scrambles away. Shoot, she didn't even took the opportunity to create the tranquilizer gun! But wait, at least she's free now. The rabbit still roams free; she needs to pin it down. Using her Quirk, she creates capture nets from her right forearm. She arches them back and readies to throw. She follows the rabbit flitting to and fro.]
Steady, aim...
[Ah, perhaps All Might needs to get out of the way soon.]
no subject
[And if you think this is bad you should see Present Mic's reaction to spiders.]
[The rabbit may have escaped his coat but it wasn't done with the giant yet, turning back on the attack almost immediately after hitting the ground--but seeing as it wasn't anywhere near All Might's face dealing with it was at least a little easier, dodging back and forth as it made to attack first one ankle and then the other, back and forth making him do a strange jig to keep it from attaching itself to his legs.]
[He looks up from the dance to see Yaoyorozu with the nets.]
Ah--good call, my girl! Crap--
[The rabbit chomped down on his pant leg and held tight even as All Might swung his foot to shake it loose, the rabbits legs pinwheeling in the open air.]
no subject
[Momo's eyebrows furrow, a frown set on her face, as her eyes follow both All Might's and the rabbit's movements. All this motion is making it hard for her to pinpoint the rabbit's exact location so she wouldn't miss it once she throws the net.
She does, however, finally see an opportunity when All Might raises a foot being chomped on by the feisty rabbit. On the bright side, at least that meant it's staying put. So without wasting anymore time, Momo throws the capture net, its weighted ropes immediately clamping down on the rabbit.
There's a pause as she waits if the rabbit will break free, but it seems the net did its job well. A cheerful smile then appears on her face.]
We... we did it, sensei!
[Sure, part of All Might's leg was trapped in the net with the bunny... but ah, details. :')]
D1
The hero sighed tiredly, hands tucked in his pockets. He leered away from Yaoyorozu, his sleeping beckoned him.]
If you don't want it, we can switch to something else.
[PLEASE MOMO. And yet, this hero felt this won't be the case. At least he tried.]
no subject
I am grateful for the concern but that won't be necessary, sensei.
[She places a hand on her chest now. It's a bit dramatic, really, but her words are sincere.]
As a temporary resident of this city, I feel that it is my duty to give back to its citizens... even if it means having to accomplish tasks as such this. We may not be in our world, but surely the ideals of being a hero still ring true... and I'd hate to fall short of achieving them. [A fist pump!] I shall begin my search over at this side, sensei. Please watch over me!
[Yes. She means just... stay there. Watching. As she crouches down and painstakingly observes every shrubbery.]
sob how did i loose this.
Still watching. All fell quiet.
... Five minutes passed.
This was awkward. A tired sigh escaped. He casually walked to the other side of the patch and crouched down as well. He traced the bottom stem with one hand, checking each plant as he came across.]
D1
Maybe, but I think it'll be a lot faster if we work as a team! What do you think, Momo?
[hopefully, she'd be willing to work together. Two pairs of eyes and two sets of arms and legs are bound to get the job done quicker. Besides, they'd get to spend some time together! Getting to work with Momo was something that Ochaco definitely wanted to do more often.]
no subject
Certainly, Uraraka! Why, we can almost think of this as training of sorts. After all, hero work doesn't always constitute high-rank missions. One has to do menial tasks as well when the situation calls for it.
[She cringes visibly, remembering how her first internship went. Boy, those were a lot of commercial shootings Uwabami made them go through. She coughs a bit to hide her embarrassment, however.]
I-In any case...! Let's see... we need to keep our eyes peeled for the one with golden leaves at its base. Shall I take the right side and you the left?
a
However, while he's certainly aware that he's not the only one with these preferences, he isn't quite expecting to run into Momo. It was just enough to catch her words. The look he offers is a little sympathetic.
"That's how it is, here. Day by day, at first. It takes some getting used to."
—Especially with the whole manifesting emotions part.
no subject
"That may be so. Still, given what I already know since I've arrived, I can't help but think getting caught unaware like this is just... a little embarrassing."
She straightens up and huffs, her signature bangs sways slightly at the gust of air she lets out. She's done her best for her shirt. It'd just have to air-dry from here.
"I suppose it could've been worse though."
no subject
Todoroki's attention lingers a bit longer upon the water, before he looks back at her.
"I think the best advice I could give is that you shouldn't hold any expectations. There's a lot that can happen here, and many things you may see that, from our world's perspective, might be strange, unheard of, or even alarming."
That's how he's been going about his time here, at least.
Ah— "But maybe you've already been told this."
no subject
Although..."
Momo takes a small pause then. She wonders if she should even tell him her thoughts about it, afraid it'll only come off as gullible optimism. But if she's learned anything the past few months (back at home, she adds in her head), it's that keeping things to herself doesn't really accomplish anything. Besides, conferring with Todoroki has always been a pleasant exercise. She hopes he doesn't mind too much.
"Not hold any expectations, you say... Is such a thing truly possible? I suppose what I mean is, is it not only natural to come to expect things to happen, good or bad they may be? And in a place so governed by emotions, perhaps having positive expectations can, ah, yield good outcomes too?"
no subject
Both Momo's reaction and response does make a very good point. They have Todoroki pausing in brief contemplation as well.
"I think what I mean, more so, is that there may be many things that will surprise you. Which, yes, definitely includes the manifestation of emotions."
. . . . .
"Like how, apparently, when I'm especially happy or in a really good mood, the air starts smelling like strawberries and vanilla." Yep.
D2
Although the more she watches that rabbit, the more convinced she is that might be a good idea.]
Young miss. Have you any water?
[So there's a 6'6 girl with pointed ears, in full ninja garb, just casually talking to Momo while the rabbit's attacking. Surely this isn't a bad time.]
no subject
But then Alice speaks and Momo, despite her predicament, actually gawks.]
Wa... water at this–
[A wince as the rabbit punts her shield a bit too roughly.]
–time?! What for?!
no subject
Rabbits are prey animals. They should run and hide instead of attacking so. The most likely cause is pain, or infection. If it is pain, it will seek to wash its wound. If infected, it may avoid the water, in which case it is rabid, and must be killed before it spreads its disease.
[A few more knives to try to pen the rabbit in, but it's surprisingly not intimidated.]
no subject
P-Please wait a moment!
[She positions herself between the rabbit and Alice, warding off any knife-throwing that may commence.]
I was tasked to simply capture this rabbit, and I've been trying to do so without inflicting any harm to it. Killing it is absolutely out of the question!
[Alas, while this standoff is happening, the rabbit now seems to be trying to escape its makeshift pen...]
no subject
[She watches the rabbit, drawing another knife.]
Though I was tasked with this, my primary occupation is that of a doctor. [... you know, a doctor, in full ninja garb, with throwing knives, it's fine.] If it attacks a person, while carrying a disease, even a simple rodent may cause a great plague. So if it is infected, killing it is the only reasonable course of action.

Those concerns weren't as dire here. It was still strange and she's still kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop, but it'd be nice.
At least moments like these help. When the world is being Weird to help prove its somewhere else. Plus it was funny. Not like water hurt anyone.
So Momo will be hearing a snort and a laugh after getting drenched, Dani standing nearby with a grin. "That is the danger of the docks."
no subject
"Danger of the docks, you say, and yet it seems my situation has caused you quite an amusement still..."
no subject
Though she is also thinking. She could help. She tells herself she shouldn't. Then she reminds herself that's not necessarily the case here.
There is water nearby that turns choppy and roiling, an anxious sort of energy to it.
"I could help. If you want," she said, holding out a hand. Despite the choppy water, the friendly smile on her face doesn't waver.
no subject
At being offered help though, she has the decency to look bashful.
"I could use some help, yes." She reaches out to the girl's hand and pulls herself up. But before she can voice out her gratitude, the water's renewed energy draws back her attention. Momo tilts her head at the small waves starting to bubble up again.
"Huh. Do you think that may be fish?"
no subject
Its fine, they are literally in another dimension, she doesn't need to hide.
Her grip tightens slightly on Momo's hand, nothing painful, but there is a sudden coldness that quickly spreads through her body, and a weird weightlessness. Its only for a second or two before there's a splash and then the feeling is gone and Danielle lets go of her hand.
The ground is now a lot more wet and Momo is decidedly more dry, though there's still a slightness dampness to her clothes and hair. "Kinda hard to separate when its been absorbed, but I could get most of the water off." Intangiblity is a very useful tool, especially with precision control.
