Kevin cringes away from her -- not from the hug, not from her messing with his hair, but from watching the woman who's meant to save him someday realize that he isn't the Xerxes Break she knows and treasures. This part never gets any easier. Which is not to say he would like to pass for that other version of himself, mind. In the past being mistaken for him has led to everything from a girl getting kidnapped just to mess with him, to Kevin himself being attacked on sight and mauled by the Bandersnatch.

In cases like this, he hates it because he's a disappointment. It may well be that the Lady Shelly will be able to come to know him as the person he's grown to be in Verens, and love who he is now just as much. A few of Break's dearest ones have. But in this moment, he's watching her hopes shatter right in front of him, watching her come to understand that he can't be the person she thinks because he doesn't have those memories, and there is no guarantee that this person he's wanted so much to have a chance to meet will have the heart to let him close.

The second time Reim Lunettes came around, they'd become good friends. But he was from somewhere in the middle of things, then. The first time he'd been from after Break's death, and though he'd insisted he could "tell them apart", he hadn't been able to tolerate Kevin at all, in the end. It had left him wondering if the best friend he'd been assured he was supposed to have was only Xerxes Break's best friend at all because they both just...happened to be there...

"...I'll wind up in front of the gate in your house, someday, when I get where I am going," he murmurs, his bright colors desaturating somewhat. "So I've been told. However...five years ago, I landed here when I was on my way there."

That should tell her everything she needs to know. Possibly the shortest explanation he has ever had to give. The fact that Shelly is rallying after her disappointment in much the same way he himself would isn't helping him, yet.
