[ Not for the first time, Arthur wonders just how he gets himself into these situations. He could be back in the city, safe and sound within the walls of the library, where the only turmoil he had to face was the threat of a paper cut. (But Arthur knows better – he’s spent so much of his life with only dusty tomes for company that it could hardly be considered living at all. Danger may follow him as certainly as those raptors are, but he wouldn’t go back to his old life for the world.)
“Don’t look down” is an awfully tall order, but Arthur somehow manages to avoid spooking himself between only glancing at where his feet need to fall and otherwise keeping his eyes squarely on Clover as she flutters along backwards in front of him.
Just when he thinks that Markus may have the right of it, only a mere few feet from safety, the small ledge begins to give way beneath his feet. Panic propels him, sees him leaping to the cliff’s edge on the other side of the chasm. For a harrowing second, he thinks he’s not going to make it, but he manages to land gracelessly in the grass, tumbling over solid ground.
His glasses are a bit askew when he glances back, panicked, at Markus. The small ledge is still there, but now there’s a sizable gap to get to the safety of the other side. ]
